The sculpture
Qwertz by the Austrian artist Franz West was placed on the Westersingel in 2001 as part of the expansion of Rotterdam’s international sculpture collection. The five monochrome coloured rolls of steel resemble enlargements of rolls of clay.

The title has no specific meaning.

The site
As part of Rotterdam Cultural Capital in 2001 the committee of Sculpture International Rotterdam wished to expand the collection through the acquisition of an existing work by Franz West. The artist visited Rotterdam to discuss the selection of the work. He was so impressed with the location that he offered to make a work specially for the site.

The Essay
Vienna was never to be a focus of the modern art world after 1945. Nevertheless, between 1965 and 1975 there was a markedly energetic art climate in the Austrian capital largely thanks to the often provocative, body-related performances of Viennese Actionists like Gunther Brus and Hermann Nitsch. Franz West was not particularly drawn to the theatrical aspect of their art, though he has always been interested in its performance aspect, which he uses in his own work.
