GABO RESTORATION

GABO RESTORATION

Research has begun
Sculpture International Rotterdam and the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (ICN) have been in lengthy discussions with the former owner (De Bijenkorf) and the new owner of this sculpture by Naum Gabo to draw up a restoration plan. The sculpture’s owner has commissioned metal experts from the ICN to investigate the sculpture’s current condition, research its original state and the appropriate restoration procedures.

Alarmed by the sculpture’s poor condition, the media and politicians have voiced their concerns. PvdA councillor and visual artist Ronald Motta has pleaded in the City Council for steps to be taken to halt the deterioration of this Rotterdam landmark. Motta: ‘There will come a time when it is life-threatening.’

Bouwfonds Asset Management, which has been responsible for the sculpture for the last three years, is currently investigating what is required to preserve the sculpture for posterity.
