SIR and BKOR present Kunstroute Rotterdam, van Price naar Price

SIR and BKOR, in collaboration with Kunsthal Rotterdam, present a new art route following the exhibition Thomas J Price. Matter of Place, on view from October 5 2024 through February 9 2025. Kunstroute Rotterdam, van Price naar Price is a walk along fourteen artworks in the center of Rotterdam. The route starts at the work Reaching Out (2020), which is temporarily on display in front of the entrance to the Kunsthal during the exhibition, to the much-discussed Moments Contained on Stationsplein. Of course, the route can also be walked the other way, from Stationsplein to the Kunsthal. The booklet, which can then also be downloaded from this website, contains texts by art historian and writer Sandra Smets. Kunstroute Rotterdam, van Price naar Price is available for free at Kunsthal Rotterdam and Rotterdam Tourist Info at Central Station.

In his sculptures, Thomas J Price is concerned with recognition in today’s society. He confronts us with stereotypes surrounding representation and identity in traditional statues, such as those on this itinerary. This art historical time travel shows how diverse artists’ conceptions of the human figure have been and how they play with visual languages to give the viewer some ‘mental homework’. For example, there is a political tinge to the statues of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp, while Monsieur Jacques by Oswald Wenckebach depicts the ordinary bourgeois. This artistically challenging company is a small sampling of Rotterdam’s extraordinary sculpture collection.

Guided tour
Join us for a walk along the route on Sunday October 27 from 11 am to 12:30 pm, accompanied by art guide Anne-Marie Ros. Keep an eye on this website and social media for further coverage.

About the art routes
The theme of Kunstroute Rotterdam, van Price naar Price, the human figure, is just one of the many subjects of the more than one thousand works of art in public spaces in Rotterdam. This gives the city a globally unique art collection, accessible 24 hours a day. In recent years, BKOR has created several art routes that lead past many works of art scattered throughout the city. All routes are offered as PDFs in Dutch and English via www.bkor.nl, but a (foldable) map is also still available for free at Rotterdam Tourist Information on the Stationsplein. The routes have also been made accessible for your cell phone without having to download an app. Go to www.bkor.nl/routes, select the route you want to walk or bike, and see where you are on the map. Curious about the other seven editions of Kunstroute Rotterdam? Look here for an overview. Have fun walking or biking!
