Kunstroute Rotterdam, van metrostation Beurs naar Stadhuis

No other period in Rotterdam saw as much construction as the so-called Post65 era, the period between 1965 and 1990. The city center was transformed with mirrored towers, brutalist office buildings, and experimental residential areas such as the Cube Houses. Rotterdam faced enormous construction challenges and initially tackled them with concrete, glass, and steel in a no-nonsense style. These new ambitions and increase in scale also included major infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, and railways, with which Rotterdam showed itself ready for the future. In the field of art, a critical counter-movement emerged in which artists translated the businesslike visual language of architecture into vibrant abstract art, pop art with humor, and more color.

BKOR and SIR, in collaboration with the Bureau Monumenten en Cultuurhistorie (Municipality of Rotterdam), have developed a route along 20 works of art and 19 buildings, most of which date from the Post65 period. Only the selected works of art are featured on this online version on our website. This route takes you criss-crossing this heritage through the ‘back streets’ of the city center, where striking Post65 buildings and art come together with other layers of time, via the cozy paths that people so longed for in the 1970s in that big, drafty city.

The route map is available at Rotterdam Tourist Information at Central Station. The online route can be downloaded here.
